After considerable reconfiguration of the Roman Empire, the city’s role and name changed numerous times over the next 100 or so years – until in 330 AD, when it was confirmed as the new capital of the Roman Empire. The ‘New Rome’ soon began to flourish to even greater degree than before; although its stature was diminished slightly when the Roman Empire was split in two, with Constantinople, as it was then called, made the capital of the eastern half.
