Located in the middle of the country surrounded by desert, Riyadh is not the easiest place to reach outside of flying. The city has its own busy airport with plenty of connecting flights to the rest of the region and beyond; so expect to fly here if you plan to visit. In theory it is possible to cross from neighbouring countries into the kingdom before travelling by road to Riyadh but in practice it is not easy. Visas, a driver and knowledge of the border crossings must be worked out first and don’t forget many neighbouring countries and indeed certain areas of Saudi itself remain volatile.
