Hungary again re-emerged as a powerful Central European civilisation although it lost some territory in the 14th century. The country as a whole though remained intact but was sorely tested by the now powerful Ottoman Empire a century later during a succession of battles with some won and some lost, the greatest success being the battle at Nandorfehervar in 1456.
